What counts as a deepfake

This covers AI face-swaps, videos, and "nudify" apps that generate a synthetic nude or sexual image from an ordinary photo — the person never actually appeared in anything like it. Legally and on every major platform, that distinction doesn't matter: a non-consensual intimate image policy applies whether the content is real or generated.

The apps and sites that generate this kind of content are also under growing legal pressure. In July 2026, San Francisco's city attorney ordered Apple and Google to remove "nudify" apps from their app stores — a sign of where enforcement is heading, though it doesn't retroactively remove anything already generated or shared.

How to remove it

    Google's tool for removing sexual images from Search results has a specific option for "a fake, AI-generated image that utilizes your likeness," and lets you turn on automatic removal for duplicates and future matches.

    Most major platforms have updated their non-consensual imagery reporting to explicitly include AI-generated or synthetic content — look for that specific category rather than a generic abuse report.

If it doesn't come down

With a deepfake, the hard part usually isn't getting one report actioned — it's finding every copy.

Common questions

Are AI-generated deepfake nudes illegal?

Yes. Since May 2026, the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act explicitly covers "digital forgeries" alongside real photos and videos — it's illegal to distribute them without consent, and covered platforms must remove a valid, reported one within 48 hours, for both adults and minors. It's enforced by the FTC.

Does StopNCII.org work for deepfakes, or just real photos?

It works for both. StopNCII's own FAQ states that if a deepfake or synthetic image is of you, you have access to it, and it's nude or semi-nude, you can hash it the same way as a real photo — they explicitly include these in their definition of NCII.

I don't know who made it or what app was used — can I still get it removed?

Yes — StopNCII, Google, and platform reports all act on the content itself, not the creator's identity.
